Emil Michael Zimbelman (Nov. 1, 1905--June 3, 1992) |
I've gathered a few photos and scanned Emil's memorial service, so that his descendants can get a glimpse of a quiet, private man I called "Grandpa."
At the viewing the night before Grandpa Emil's service, my family was sitting in folding chairs when my middle child, Danny, who was six then, leaned over and whispered, "Grandpa Emil is the luckiest person in the room."

Emil married Arrilla May Dally (O'Leary) on July 18, 1864 |
Grandpa Emil was a man of few words. He would sit in his chair and watch us kids play and took movies of us. He did have a booming voice that sometimes startled us. One memory of him I will always remember is in 1980 when I had my gallbladder out. It was done the old fashioned way and I was miserable. I was in the hospital for 8 days. One day in walked my Grandpa Emil. I didn't know he was even in town. He sat down and talked a little bit and brought me a box of chocolate covered cherries. I felt his love that day and whenever I see chocolate covered cherries I think of Grandpa Emil.❤️
ReplyDeleteWow, that's alot of 3's! And June 3 is my birthdate. Until I read this, I didn't remember that he passed away on that day. Grandpa did have a booming voice, but when he used it around us kids I think he was showing his ornery side. I wanted to buy a table from him when I was in my 20's. It was a table he had on his back patio that he was selling. Anyway, he was being his ornery self trying to get me to negotiate with him. I was too afraid to so I'm sure I paid full price...which probably wasn't much anyway. I also remember that he came to help (or maybe entertain the great grandkids) while we packed for a move. My youngest, Mike, was very entertained with Grandpa taking in and out his false teeth. I think that there were Brachs butterscotch disk candies involved, as well. Good times with Grandpa Emil. He was well loved.
ReplyDeleteOh my sweet quiet Step-Father!!! I unlike Mike did not live with he and Mother, as I was long gone to Texas when they married in Denver in 1963, I think. I first met Emil while dragging Main Street, they were not dating yet and I did not know him. I was honking at everyone I knew in 1960 after just graduating from high school in Benkelman and our family buying the Hilltop. He scared me as he pulled me over and reminded me not to honk at everyone?
ReplyDeleteHe was a great Grandfather to my two girls and oh how they loved visiting St Francis most Summers to see Grandma and Grandpa Zimbelman.
I also remember his stern voice he could get your attention immediately. I remember he took us fishing one time to Trenton Nebraska where we caught a ton of fish and then had to clean them all. Another memory was when he hand painted the 50’s GMC pickup with a brush it looked really good from a distance. He was a great grandpa he always was talking movies of all the Grandkids.
ReplyDeleteI can remember his laugh that got me tickled. I also remember him smoking his pipe in his big chair taking it easy. I think he and Arilla visited my family in Germany and Georgia. Don’t remember a lot, I do know Emil was a cool dude.🙏💕
